Context and importance

The 2026/27 Champions League has reached the halfway point of the league phase. Four matchdays are done and only four remain before the knockout rounds.

The format is unforgiving. The top eight go straight to the round of 16. Clubs from 9th to 24th must play two extra games in the playoffs. From 25th down, it is goodbye to Europe's top competition.

And that danger zone features heavyweights: Atlético de Madrid, Inter, Manchester United, Roma and Napoli. Giants that cannot afford another slip.

⚽
Key fact

With four matchdays left, none of the five big clubs listed is in the top 8. Napoli, in 27th, are even outside the playoff zone.

What happened

Atlético de Madrid are 23rd with 4 points: one win, one draw and two defeats. They lost to Liverpool and Bayern and had players sent off against Manchester United and Stuttgart.

Inter have 6 points in 15th. They beat Shakhtar Donetsk, even with ten men, and Feyenoord. But they lost away to Real Madrid and fell 4-3 to Club Brugge at San Siro.

Manchester United also have 6 points, in 17th. They thrashed Sabah on the opening night and came from behind to beat Roma, but lost to Atlético and Como. Roma have 4 points in 20th. Napoli, on 3, sit 27th after defeats to Arsenal, Villarreal and Porto, the last one a heavy loss.

Impact on the clubs and the competition

For Atlético, the contrast is striking. Simeone's side is fighting for the top of LaLiga, yet in Europe they need at least 5 more points to dream of the playoffs, according to Trivela's calculations.

At Inter, Serie A Champions in 2025/26 and favourites to retain the title, the demand is for consistency. A squad of that level needs at least 3 points to avoid embarrassment. The same goes for United.

The most delicate case is Massimiliano Allegri's Napoli. Serie A runners-up, they need at least 6 points and were already knocked out in the league phase last season. A repeat would be a heavy blow.

In the new Champions League, being big is not enough: sleep for four matchdays and you wake up out of Europe.

Reaction from the football world

The sports press treated the situation as a general warning. Trivela listed the five clubs as the big names at greatest risk of an early exit this season.

In Manchester, the mood is tense. Head coach Michael Carrick is under scrutiny, with the team hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone. The Champions League has become another front of pressure.

In Madrid, frustration centres on discipline. The red cards against United and Stuttgart proved costly and became a recurring topic among Atlético fans.

⚠️
Warning

United face double pressure: risk in the Champions League and a campaign close to the Premier League relegation zone.

Relevant history

The 36-team league phase format debuted in 2024/25. Each club plays eight games against different opponents, and a single table replaced the old groups of four.

The change ended the giants' comfort. In the past, a weak group meant early qualification. Now every dropped point counts in an overall table, and goal difference has already decided who stayed in and who went out.

The weight of the shirts is huge. Inter reached the 2025 final. United have three European titles. Atlético have reached three finals. None of them expected to be doing these sums four matchdays from the end.

📜
Track record

Napoli already went out in the league phase last season. Another exit would be their second in a row in the current format.

Numbers and statistics

The two editions of the new format provide a good benchmark. In both, the 8th-placed team finished on 16 points. That is the magic number for anyone still dreaming of a direct spot.

Reaching the playoffs demands much less. The 24th-placed team had 11 points in 2024/25 and 9 points in 2025/26. In both seasons, goal difference decided the last spot.

That is why the calculations point to around 9 points as the minimum. Atlético and Roma need 5, Inter and United need 3, and Napoli need 6.

Atlético do not face any top-18 team in their four remaining games. Their opponents sit between 19th and 25th.

Expert opinion

The league format exposed an uncomfortable truth: a slip against a mid-table side costs the same as a loss to a giant. Club Brugge at San Siro and Como against United prove it.

Of the five, Atlético have the easiest path, as long as they stop playing with ten men. Inter and United need little, but carry internal pressure. Roma and Napoli are in a far more critical situation.

Napoli are the biggest concern. They need more points than their rivals and open the run away at City. Without beating Club Brugge in Naples, the maths becomes almost impossible.

Atlético have the fixtures to escape, Inter and United have the squads to do it, but Roma and Napoli will need something close to perfection. For Napoli, the clash with Club Brugge on 8 December is worth their entire European season.
